  8. Basia Bulat (CAN)
    Artist image
Breathless, thirsty, dislodged from dreary nostalgia.
Since the age of three, Basia has been sitting on piano stools and trying to hammer things out. It started with her piano-teacher mum, but along the way Basia’s picked up guitar, autoharp, banjo, ukelele, sax and flute. In high-school her instrument was the upright bass – a lone girl among “eight-foot-tall guys, goofing off with the tubas”. There’s a sense of play that still suffuses her music, jostling under the songs of regret and love, want and joy.

  12. Circlesquare (CAN)

This isn't your usual 'danceä music. These are opiated rave-ups, like early bleep techno chopped and screwed, or shoegaze in an electric exoskeleton. Beaten down, scuffed-toe bass meditations wrapped in desert blues and dub delay- ambient music with an anti-pop brain and a rock n roll heart.
Circlesquare is Vancouver, British Columbia's Jeremy Shaw now living in Berlin. Don't be suprised, though, if he doesn't sound like any of his citymates: for the legnth of his career, Circlesquare has never sounded quite like anyone but Circlesquare.

It’s all in the name. Das Pop can rock but they don’t make rock.
They are shameless in their creation of ‘white’ power pop full of supple references to 1960s hit bands, 1970s singer/songwriters and 1980s new wave. But their music never feels retro. They combine the old with the new in a way that only makes perfect sense for a band that developed a few bar stools away from the sample mayhem of 2manyDJs.

  55. Rasmus Kellerman (SWE)
    Artist image
In just five years time, Rasmus Kellerman had taken Tiger Lou as far as he could. The latest record – “A Partial Print” – was the concept stretched to its maximum. Now he didn’t know which way to head.
Rasmus Kellermans music is beautiful melodies and the powerful narratives that have carried Tiger Lou onwards, but also sounds like nothing Rasmus Kellerman has ever done before. It sounds like a young man with dreams about to loose his way – and who finds himself again, alone with a guitar, on stage, where he is supposed to be.
