  2. Alice Boman (SWE)
    Artist image
Hailing from Malmö, Sweden, the singer/songwriter first appeared when she released 2013’s Skisser via Adrian Recordings. Swedish for “sketches,” Skisser was just that – delicate home recordings from her bedroom Boman gracefully unleashed to the world, that were never meant to fall on any other ears but her own.
Alice Boman’s voice hits with the emotional force and haunting fragility of Nina Simone. Timeless and direct, the Swedish singer returns with a wistful collection of songs on EP II, set to be released June 3.

    Artist image
Breathless, thirsty, dislodged from dreary nostalgia.
Since the age of three, Basia has been sitting on piano stools and trying to hammer things out. It started with her piano-teacher mum, but along the way Basia’s picked up guitar, autoharp, banjo, ukelele, sax and flute. In high-school her instrument was the upright bass – a lone girl among “eight-foot-tall guys, goofing off with the tubas”. There’s a sense of play that still suffuses her music, jostling under the songs of regret and love, want and joy.

Music for an escapist thrill. Caribou is the project of electronic artist Daniel Snaith.
A lot has happened for Caribou since the release of 2010's acclaimed album 'Swim' - a globe-spanning headline tour won the band a reputation as a fearsome live act. In 2012 the band supported Radiohead on an extensive tour covering North America, Europe and Mexico but in 2013 everything fell silent as Dan Snaith hid away in the studio to work on the follow-up album. Now things are starting to stir again in the Caribou camp - there's a lot of things coming during 2014...

  13. Cloud Nothings (USA)
    Artist image
Cloud Nothings was founded in a Cleveland basement, the one-man recording project of Dylan Baldi, an unassuming, then 18-year-old student of song with a breathtaking ear for melody.
Prolific from the start, Baldi's early work was rough but immediate: crudely recorded, spring-loaded spasms of Buzzcocks-informed pop that quickly found an online following among the lo-fi-inclined. When an opportunity presented itself to open a small show in Brooklyn, Baldi abandoned a still-in-progress final project to be there. The gamble paid off — he's been touring ever since, using every available break to write and record more.

Crooks on Tape is John Schmersal (Enon, Brainiac), Rick Lee (Enon, Skeleton Key, Butter 08), and Joey Galvan. The unscripted band was born out of a simple notion: convene, improvise, and record every moment.
In 2010, the Los Angeles trio assembled a rotating fortress of instruments, synthesizers, samplers, and loopers. Crooks recorded hundreds of hours of material, largely instrumental in its original performance. Fingerprint is the first evidence of this undertaking and a window into the band’s sound. The debut record you hear is analogous to tiny snapshots of an altered crime scene.

Setting out on her own, she has taken elements of her band’s sound and spun them into her own brand of bittersweet, sun-bleached pop. Breathing vocals over mesmerizing keyboard phrases, Erika produces an effect that approaches the supernatural, with tough, spring-loaded beats lending gravity to the otherwise hazy, delirious songs.

Formed three years ago by Portland musical mainstays Corrina Repp and Joe Haege – who between them cover piano, drums, percussion, guitar, vocals and samples, and who have carved out cult reputations as a solo artist and with 31 Knots respectively, amongst other things.
The band have been making a name for themselves in the North West ever since, refining and perfecting their unusually otherworldly, primitively spiritual sound.

  94. Tweens (USA)
    Artist image
Bridget Battle’s last band might have been a high school choir, but the 21-year-old singer for Cincinnati’s Tweens is no goody two shoes.
Look no further for proof than their recently released Self-Titled LP, the punk-tinged debut from the trash-pop trio, that showcases a melodic, driven and exceedingly catchy sound that’s anything but well behaved. So rat your hair, slip on your leather jacket and hold on tight because Tweens may be young but they’re certainly not naïve, and with the release of this freshman LP, they’re breaking curfew and nobody’s safe.

  95. Vulkano (SWE)
    Artist image
Vulkano is an explosive new duo pushing punk forward in their own charming way. Uncompromising, extrovert and maximalist.
With a passion for astrology, the paranormal and nature, healing stones, tropical landscapes, mythology and mountains, we introduce the constanty head banging Lisa Pyk-Wirström and tour de force, the hissing feline Cissi Efraimsson. For Vulkano, it's really all about their live show, a power unto itself. If they could, they'd have streaming hot bombastic shows containing choreography, costumes, magic tricks and light displays, creating a world where everything is possible.

  96. WATERS (USA)
    Artist image
Spring 2010 saw the demise of Port O’Brien, and founding member/front man Van Pierszalowski needed a break from the hectic, wonderful mess that is touring.
He stumbled into respite in Oslo, Norway, and spent some time away from making music. Van explored the new city, swam in the Norwegian fjords, enjoyed the weather and the experience of seasons changing. He found his bearings and fell in love again.

  97. When Saints Go Machine (DK)
    Artist image
When Saints Go Machine are a hard band to pin down, four young men doing things with electro pop that no one has done before.
The Danish four-piece formed in 2007 are a complicated mix of influences. There’s dance music in there, for sure, but also post punk, some experimental electronica in the Aphex Twin mould, and, crucially, a healthy dose of pop. You could describe the end result as a heady mix of Caribou, The Knife/Fever Ray and Arthur Russell. But, really, it doesn’t sound like anything else out there.

Liberated abandon of their primitive soul strikes an immidiate and invigorating chord hard in the lister.
Mariam Wallentin and Andreas Weliin create their music with constant spontinaiety and exploration into sounds, rythms and instruments as well as a desperation and obsession to create timeless music that addresses the basicalities and essense of life.

  103. Young Galaxy (CAN)
    Artist image
Hailing from Montreal, Canada, Young Galaxy is the brainchild of Stephen Ramsay (ex-Stars) and Catherine McCandless.
By way of background, both Ramsey and McCandless stem from island roots, from Canada’s Western frontier, that place of rising tides, beach side campfires and fogged-in cedars. Yet, there’s another facet, a cool urbaneness, the measured cadence of a city strut. Years spent in the fertile cosmopolitanism of Montreal have made their mark.
