  3. Alice Boman (SWE)
    Artist image
Hailing from Malmö, Sweden, the singer/songwriter first appeared when she released 2013’s Skisser via Adrian Recordings. Swedish for “sketches,” Skisser was just that – delicate home recordings from her bedroom Boman gracefully unleashed to the world, that were never meant to fall on any other ears but her own.
Alice Boman’s voice hits with the emotional force and haunting fragility of Nina Simone. Timeless and direct, the Swedish singer returns with a wistful collection of songs on EP II, set to be released June 3.

After nine years of existence, Fullerton’s Audacity has left the garage of their humble 9th grade beginning, but the garage hasn’t left the spirit of their music.
Audacity may be of legal drinking age, and they may have moved out of a garage into a proper rehearsal room, but maturity hasn’t tempered that youthful exuberance of a band just learning how to wield their weapons. Instead, their tenure as a band has endowed them with the musical precision of a well-trained army.

  9. Basia Bulat (CAN)
    Artist image
Breathless, thirsty, dislodged from dreary nostalgia.
Since the age of three, Basia has been sitting on piano stools and trying to hammer things out. It started with her piano-teacher mum, but along the way Basia’s picked up guitar, autoharp, banjo, ukelele, sax and flute. In high-school her instrument was the upright bass – a lone girl among “eight-foot-tall guys, goofing off with the tubas”. There’s a sense of play that still suffuses her music, jostling under the songs of regret and love, want and joy.

Our Love is formed around a mixture of digital pop production, hip hop inspired beats, muted house basslines and a love of shuffling garage that can be traced all the way back to the time of Start Breaking My Heart which are, of course, all filtered through Dan's own unique perspective. The warm analogue sounds of classic soul should not be overlooked either, for they weave themselves most intensely into the records DNA.

Combining emotional vocals and perfectly paced piano led orchestrations, Garneau's has found his own voice, which is utterly magical.

    Artist image
Crooks on Tape is John Schmersal (Enon, Brainiac), Rick Lee (Enon, Skeleton Key, Butter 08), and Joey Galvan. The unscripted band was born out of a simple notion: convene, improvise, and record every moment.
In 2010, the Los Angeles trio assembled a rotating fortress of instruments, synthesizers, samplers, and loopers. Crooks recorded hundreds of hours of material, largely instrumental in its original performance. Fingerprint is the first evidence of this undertaking and a window into the band’s sound. The debut record you hear is analogous to tiny snapshots of an altered crime scene.

Never one to rest on his laurels or do what’s expected, Dan Mangan has, yet again, transformed his sound. From the traditional stripped-down acoustic folk of 2010’s Nice Nice Very Nice, to the sweeping orchestration and avant-jazz arrangements of 2012’s Oh Fortune, Dan Mangan works best when he’s moving forward, challenging himself.
His latest, Club Meds, released in 2015 by City Slang, is a departure, both sonically and thematically. The music is darker, more complex, but just as affecting as anything he’s ever done, with the richness and honesty of his singular voice ascending over the music.

Girls Names formed in Belfast, but they’ve long considered themselves a European band. The distinction is important – their vision of Europe is one of weird, labyrinthian histories, blackest-ever-black coffee, and long drives to dismal places.

The atmospherics, lyrical heart, and energy are carried through to this new album: a science fiction themed art-pop odyssey, The Birthday of the World. Inspired by stories by Isaac Asimov, Ursula K Le Guin, and Arthur C Clarke, ‘The Birthday Of The World’ is an exploration of Earth’s last days and the colonization of Mars.

A discovery of records long stashed away at various dilapidated thrift stores in Alabama lead the entities of Man or Astro-Man? to the scratched-up sounds of Link Wray, The Ventures, Dick Dale, Duane Eddy, The Marketts, The Safaris, and other instrumental guitar oriented music of the late fifties and early sixties.

Mariam The Believer is the nom de guerre that Mariam Wallentin, the singer from the duo Wildbirds & Peacedrums, has chosen for herself.
In this solo adventure Wallentin leaves the mix of minimalistic blues, pop and rock impro that has been the characteristic of Wildbirds & Peacedrums behind, and steps down into a dark hole filled with vibrant creativity. An oriental ambience fuses with the warm silhouettes of experimental pop and unpolished soul in a way that nourishes both body and mind.

Showcasing Rundle's exceptional playing more vividly than the dense architecture of the Sparowes could allow, Marriages' departure from purely instrumental rock, too, helped bring her to the forefront, revealing a voice equally fragile and ferocious.

But when he showed up at a studio in Sacramento in March 2014, he had his affairs in order. Plug the vocal mic into a guitar amp. Plug the guitar into an overheating box of vacuum tubes. Put the computer in the closet. Roll the tape.

Early on in their career, Hall and Rogers made the choice to limit their sound to whatever they could play between them, using only their mouths, hands and feet, and eventually the sound became larger than the band itself.

    Artist image
A new Reykjavik based duo and gentlemen of the sea THROWS, call home a studio that overlooks the old industrial harbour. Inspired by life on the ocean and the flow of the winding back streets, crowded bars and bustling fishermen cafes of Iceland's capital.
Whilst watching the sunrise over the water through the big open window overlooking the Harbour, the music flows out of them like the waves hitting the shoreline as synths, old guitars and an old battered off-key piano are all they need to take their otherworldly pop wherever the wind may take them.

  126. Tove Lo (SWE)
    Artist image
As anyone with ears will tell you, Sweden is quite good when it comes to fostering amazing pop talent. With Stockholm's Tove Lo, however, the typical mould of elegant heartfelt electropop has been beautifully corrupted by the sort of lyrical honesty and rawness that not only ruffles feathers, but makes you want to clutch your hand to your chest and wail along at the top of your lungs.
“I don't like to filter it. I get into a flow and get it out, but if I stop myself I just think 'why? Why be subtle? Just say it as it is'. It's not 'I'm a single girl, let's party all night long', it's more 'I'm really destructive right now and I don't care'. I think my honesty bothers some people.”

  128. Tweens (USA)
    Artist image
Bridget Battle’s last band might have been a high school choir, but the 21-year-old singer for Cincinnati’s Tweens is no goody two shoes.
Look no further for proof than their recently released Self-Titled LP, the punk-tinged debut from the trash-pop trio, that showcases a melodic, driven and exceedingly catchy sound that’s anything but well behaved. So rat your hair, slip on your leather jacket and hold on tight because Tweens may be young but they’re certainly not naïve, and with the release of this freshman LP, they’re breaking curfew and nobody’s safe.

  131. When Saints Go Machine (DK)
    Artist image
When Saints Go Machine are a hard band to pin down, four young men doing things with electro pop that no one has done before.
The Danish four-piece formed in 2007 are a complicated mix of influences. There’s dance music in there, for sure, but also post punk, some experimental electronica in the Aphex Twin mould, and, crucially, a healthy dose of pop. You could describe the end result as a heady mix of Caribou, The Knife/Fever Ray and Arthur Russell. But, really, it doesn’t sound like anything else out there.

  132. Wildbirds & Peacedrums (SWE)
    Artist image
Liberated abandon of their primitive soul strikes an immidiate and invigorating chord hard in the lister.
Mariam Wallentin and Andreas Weliin create their music with constant spontinaiety and exploration into sounds, rythms and instruments as well as a desperation and obsession to create timeless music that addresses the basicalities and essense of life.

  136. Young Ejecta (USA)
    Artist image
Young Ejecta is an electronic duo based in Brooklyn, NY comprised of singer-songwriter Leanne Macomber (Fight Bite, Neon Indian) and acclaimed producer Joel Ford (Autre Ne Veut, Oneohtrix Point Never, Ford & Lopatin).
Their collaboration began in 2012 when Ford sifted through years of Macomber’s foggy melodic bedroom demos. He, in turn, offered instrumental pieces of his own and a record was in the works. His slick sound and skillful arrangements elevated Macomber’s lo-fi pop ballads, while her acrobatic melodies and whispery vocals gave whimsy and dimension to Ford’s determined beats and dancable textures.

  137. Young Galaxy (CAN)
    Artist image
The winter of 2014/2015 took Young Galaxy from their studio in Montreal to Gothenburg and back.
The band’s brilliant new full length Falsework completes the sound they have been mining on their past two albums Shapeshifting (2011) and Ultramarine (2013) with producer Dan Lissvik (Studio, Atelje). The album is undeniably synth pop without the simplicity and was informed and inspired by 80’s electro, acid house and r&b, music that was well ahead of its time. Falsework was made using machines from the past to sound like music from the future.

In the process, the charismatic Malaysian singer-songwriter—who makes her Verve Records debut with Nocturnal—has become the first artist from her homeland to conquer the American market.
Creating an organic blend of contemporary pop, acoustic folk and soulful R&B, combining her engaging voice and expressive songcraft with imaginative production to create wholly distinctive music that’s won her comparisons with the likes of Feist, Adele and Norah Jones.
